The Future of Food – Future Academy

Our eating habits change, and there is increasing attention for sustainable food, such as meat substitutes and local products. And that is a good thing, because the need for (good) food increases with the growth of the world population and prosperity. The search for the answer to the question: “How can we feed 10 billion people in the future?” Is therefore extremely interesting and challenging. That is why we organize the Future of Food Academy for the third time, with a brand new and inspiring program.

We will approach this question from the five As that the Center for Studies in Food Security uses. These five As share food security in five aspects: Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, Adequacy and Agency.

This event consists of 4 evenings. The ticket you buy is valid for all evenings. Go to the website of Future Academy for more information.

Session 1: Availability & Accessibility

One of the big challenges of a growing world population and increasing prosperity is the ever increasing need for proteins. Meat contains a lot of protein, but for production, a lot of land is needed. In addition, the (ecological) impact of this industry is gigantic. Time to look at alternative sources of protein. But are they available to everyone?

Niek Koning (former lecturer at Wageningen University) opens the evening with the Five A’s of Food Security before we zoom in on Acceptability & Accessibility.

The composition of the discussion panel ensures a promising evening! Ira van Eelen, expert in the field of in vitro meat will join. What is that status of technical the developments? And are we running behind in the Netherlands?
With Kim Voogd we discuss whether meat alternatives can also come in handy to provide people in crisis areas with protein sources.
Jordi Bekker then tells us what kind of role protein shakes can play there, and whether these shakes will be our future meals.
Finally, Marjolein van der Spiegel, expert in the field of novel food legislation, takes us into the question whether there is enough room for innovation and experimentation in this area.

Note: the language of this evening is Dutch.
