New Business Summit

New Business Summit is the realization of our belief: In order to solve pressing societal problems most effectively, businesses today need to stem from an alignment of effort among various actors in an ecosystem. Entrepreneurs, corporates, investors, SMEs, research institutions and governments should come together with shared efforts to tackle real-world societal challenges. The event aims to be the platform addressing the need for this synergy. The winners of The Hague Innovators Challenge 2017 will also be announced on this day.

We call for enthusiastic owners and supporters of businesses in smart technology to join us. For startups the event creates an opportunity to exchange and validate their approach with the community that can think out loud with you. For all ecosystem actors it is the place where they can seek for future opportunities to collaborate.

The event is co-organized by World Startup Factory, the startup entrepreneurs in our current Connectivity Accelerator and Impact City The Hague.

Keynote speaker

Jeroen van der Sommen, the Co-Founder of Akvo and the Managing DIrector of Netherlands Water Partnership

Jeroen van der Sommen has started as a groundwater hydrogeologist in West Africa and during 10 years in the field of water and sanitation and water resources management he learned about development. As a pioneer he loved to set up new teams, bringing people together, and to motivate and inspire them; in the Netherlands and abroad.

Building bridges and managing partnerships was Jeroen’s drive behind the Netherlands (and the European) Water Partnership: public-private parties, NGOs and knowledge institutes working on common goals.

Innovation is the drive behind Akvo: in trying to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, how can we make better use of modern tools like mobile telephones and internet? What can prevent us from reinventing the wheel? Jeroen found that our (hydrological) memory is short or virtual none existing: we can do better: by being more transparent, by sharing our experience and knowledge more efficient and by reporting back on our failures and successes. Not each of us alone (with their own tools), but in international partnerships of governments, donors, foundations, NGOs, private companies and knowledge institutes in an ‘open source’ way.

Breakout Sessions

There are 8 sessions, divided into 2 rounds (i.e. 4 sessions per round). Each session is a panel discussion including a startup, a corporate, an SME, and a public institution, where each panel member presents their approach to tackle the same challenge. A Q&A follows when the audience takes part in validating these solution. We expect these interactions to highlight best industry practices and help inspire new possibilities.
